Across Canada, 8 people are killed by fire each week. This points to a critical need for advancements in the science and practice of fire safety through development of innovative fire-resistant materials and new fire protection technologies. However, incomplete understanding of fire dynamics, lack of appropriate test methods and limitations in fire models often hinder development of novel approaches or impede acceptance of innovations as appropriate alternatives to current practice. The proposed research will advance the scientific basis for next generation fire safety in two important areas: 1) fire behaviour of rigid polyurethane (PU) foam and 2) advanced fire suppression.
