This proposal is for the development of a prototype test strip, which integrates fully electrical carbon nanotube based immunosensors and microfluidic channels. The goal is to validate the feasibility of using the test strip, operated by simple electronics, to rapidly detect brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in a drop of blood. BNP is a very useful molecular marker in blood for the diagnosis and prognosis of heart failure. The resulted technology could ultimately lead to home-use BNP monitoring systems, similar to the commonly used blood glucose meters. There is no home-use BNP test available currently. This project is the first joint R & D effort by Tang's BIONANO group at University of Waterloo and Mespere Lifesciences, a company pioneering monitoring technologies critical to early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The Tang group will contribute key enabling technologies for the construction of the proposed test strip and Mespere will contribute expertise in medical device engineering and assist in the validation against FDA approved references.
