"Bonding, Structure and Properties of Nanoscale Materials"

This proposal aims to support an ambitious research program related to the study of the relationship between properties, chemical bonding/electronic structure and structure in nanoscale materials. The planned research program aims to study the role of atomic configuration of interfaces, due to the termination, valence changes induced by strain, and the presence of defects on the properties and stability of materials. This will cover the study of 1) complex oxides thin films with high-temperature superconductors and 2) semiconductor films. A second component of the program is to explore 3) how the structures of functional oxides and nanoparticles affect and respond to stimulation with light. The research will make extensive use of a suite of instruments in the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, a world-class facility developed by the PI, that includes two of the most advanced transmission electron microscopes in the world that will make it possible to achieve sub-Angstrom resolution and synchrotron-quality spectra. These instruments will provide new information on bonding (via spectroscopy) and structure of materials (via imaging and modeling) at an unprecedented spatial resolution and spectroscopic sensitivity, including the first high-power multiple-wavelength laser within an electron microscope with a monochromator, so that entirely new research can be undertaken and new discoveries in this new field can be made.
