Canada has been the world's leading producer and exporter of oilseed flax. More than half of all Canadian flax is produced in Saskatchewan, with the remainder grown in Manitoba and Alberta. The Canadian Prairie Provinces produce nearly 633,500 tonnes salvageable oilseed flax straw annually. Hence, there is a need for developing value-added flax fibre materials along with other renewable fibres. The lignocellulosic fibres derived from plants such as flax, hemp and other sources are used as the reinforcement in biocomposites. Biocomposites have already proven their worth as weight-saving materials; however, the current challenges are to make their properties match to conventional plastic according to the industrial demands. Maintaining dimensional stability and shrinkage are some of the main challenges for injection moulded products.
