In a quantum computer (QC), the 0 and 1 values of a normal computer bit are replaced with an essentially infinite number of possible superpositions of the two pure states of a quantum bit, or qubit. In addition, qubits can be linked together in nonintuitive ways using entanglement, a process which has no analog in our macroscopic world. It is already well understood that such a QC could be enormously more powerful than the largest imaginable normal computer for certain classes of problems. This potential for 'weird' quantum effects to have revolutionary practical applications has clearly caught the interest of the public.
