Feed cost represents a significant proportion of production cost for most fish culture operations and proteins represent about 50% of feed cost. In order to improve profitability, fish feed manufacturers are progressively reducing fish meal levels in their feeds and are relying increasingly on more economical protein sources. The essential amino acids (EAAs) composition of many economical protein sources is generally less good than that of fish meal. Consequently, more attention needs to be paid to ensuring that EAA requirements of the fish are met.
