One main challenge in regenerative medicine resides in the precise and efficient control of the interactions between cells and materials. Within the last decade, the development of new materials with potential to serve as scaffolds to support cell growth has undergone rapid expansion. In that context, novel vascular therapies aiming at replacing small diameter arteries are now developed to treat diseased vessels, the major cause of illness, disability and death in Canada. However, current issues include the lack of prosthetic endothelialization that is limited by the intrinsic properties of the biomaterial composing the grafts, and directly related to high occurrence of graft thrombosis and intimal hyperplasia.
