My research program investigates the diversity and composition of microbial communities, and the links between community composition and ecosystem productivity and processes. In order to conduct this research, my lab has developed molecular and computational techniques for analyzing microbial communities, including one of the first Illumina-based 16S rRNA gene sequencing methods, a method for assembly of paired-end sequencing reads and a computational software pipeline for analyzing the resulting data. Using a phylogenetic network method we developed, we explored the collection of rare sequences within a single Arctic tundra soil sample and discovered novel clades representing significant phylogenetic novelty.
