Microorganisms are central to wastewater treatment and play an important role in preventing toxicity to aquatic life by removing ammonia. Autotrophic bacteria have long been recognized as important for oxidizing ammonia in aquatic and terrestrial environments and are used by our industrial partner, Hagen Industries, as supplemental seed populations for biological aquarium filtration (i.e., Cycle aquarium supplement). Because our recent research has implicated Archaea in both wastewater treatment and aquarium filtration, we propose to develop protocols for the application of archaeal enrichment cultures to aquarium inoculants for establishing aquarium ammonia oxidation.
