Dynamic ductile fracture is an important topic in the design and material selection of higher-pressure Northern pipelines made of high strength steel (HSS). The speed of ductile fracture of pipelines under high pressure could be as high as 400 m/s. Therefore, the investigation of speed-dependent dynamic fracture is required to understand the role of crack speed in ductile fracture of high-pressured pipelines. Although speed-dependent dynamic fracture has been the topic of some previous works, its relevance and implication to dynamic fracture in HSS pipelines have not yet been addressed. This has raised a major challenge to Canada's pipeline industries. The present proposal aims to explore the underlying mechanism of speed-sensitive dynamic ductile fracture and its implication to HSS pipeline designs. This proposal will particularly focus on:
