In the world of mathematics, the field called "operator algebras" is vibrant and of high impact. It describes non-commutative objects, that is, operations whose outcome depends on their order of launching. Operator algebraists are constantly seeking universal objects. This means, roughly, that they appear naturally, and can be associated in a canonical manner to a wide family of other objects. In a specific setting, called product systems, two such objects in particular have been extensively studied during recent years: these are the Toeplitz and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
