Gasification is a process which converts coal and/or biomass into syngas--a high-energy mixture of small molecules such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Then, downstream, this mixture can be converted into many kinds of useful energy products, such as diesel, gasoline, ethanol, and electricity. Gasification makes it possible to produce transportation fuels from non-petroleum sources and also to generate "green" power while capturing CO2 in a more efficient way. Thus, gasification has enjoyed considerable attention in recent years as a possible route to secure and sustainable energy. However, gasification occurs at very high temperature and the syngas produced must be cooled before use, but current gasifier designs do not do this efficiently.
