The exploration and production of gold deposits contributes significantly to the Canadian economy in terms of the generation of royalties, tax income and employment. The Yukon, historically, has been one of the major gold producing areas in Canada and in 2011, over 300 million dollars were spent on mineral exploration in the Territory.
