英文摘要
The town of Faro, in Central Yukon, was built in 1968 to service the Anvil mine, once the largest lead-zinc mines in the world. The Anvil mine closed and re-opened several times but operations were finally shut down in 1998. Since then there has been little economic development in the area. Silver Range Resources has a series of claims called the Keg Project with 22 zones of mineralization which are 10-45 km from the Faro town-site. The main commodities of interest are silver, lead and zinc but the prospects are unusual in that they also contain quite high amounts of tin and indium. Indium is a "strategic" metal, which is increasingly used in liquid crystal displays for flat panel screens.
It is thought the mineralization is formed by hydrothermal fluids which come from igneous intrusions in the area but it is not known which intrusions are important and the age of these intrusions. There appears to be at least two generations of silver mineralization of quite different origins but whether these events are related is not known. This proposal seeks to match funding from Silver Range Resources to support two graduate student projects. The aims of these projects are to determine the nature, origin and age of the different styles of mineralization and to build a geological model of the mineralization on the Keg Property. This will help the company to refine their exploration strategies and to choose targets for future drilling programs.
