If not managed, hydrogen sulphide (H2S) emission from stormwater retention ponds can cause water quality and quantity problems that are detrimental to property values, human health, and watershed health. Several of the hundreds of stormwater retention ponds and constructed wetlands located across the City of Edmonton generate high levels of H2S. Nitrate products applied to these ponds by the City of Edmonton failed to counteract H2S production. Little work has been done to characterize the stormwater retention ponds that produce H2S. The lack of information regarding these ponds has made it difficult to implement effective control strategies for the emission of H2S. Therefore, a study of Edmonton's stormwater chemistry and microbiology might suggest a method to alleviate the problem.
