Computational fluid dynamic modeling and pilot testing for dissolved air flotation optimization

This project will help Corix Water Systems to improve their dissolved air flotation (DAF) water treatment process. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a DAF system has been developed by the research team, but needs validation. Corix is building a pilot-scale DAF system to test methods to improve performance. Through this NSERC CRD project, an expanded pilot-scale testing program will be conducted to generate data specifically needed to validate the CFD modeling results. With a validated CFD model, Corix and the University team will then be able to explore a much wider range of DAF system configurations than would be otherwise possible, including changes to the DAF separation zone dimensions, air fraction, and position of the collection system, with the goal of improving the maximum loading rate from the current 10 m/hr to a loading rate in the order of 30-40 m/hr, which is required to compete with leading international DAF vendors.
