Petro-Canada has developed new, environmentally friendly, chemistry that controls plant diseases by inducing the natural resistance in host plants. These products have never been tested on onions or carrots. This project will evaluate these products, alone and in combination, for the control important diseases of onions and carrots. Stemphyllium leaf blight on onion, caused by Stemphyllium vesicarium (Wall.) Simmons, is a new disease of onion in Ontario and Canada. The fungus infects the foliage, reducing the photosynthetic area and yield. Different rates and application timings of the Petro-Canada products will be tested, in combination with new fungicides. Dr. McDonald's lab has research on the detection and forecasting of Stemphyllium on onions, which provides synergy with the efficacy trials.
