Skin cancer is the most common cancer in North America, with over 550000 new cases being diagnosed each year. One in seven Canadians will develop a skin cancer during their lifetime. At present, the clinical diagnosis of skin cancer is based on visual examination followed by biopsy of suspicious lesions. Dermoscopy is commonly used to magnify the lesions for a more accurate examination. Various types of pigmented skin lesions, particularly regarding the differentiation of benign and malignant melanocytic lesions, can be determined through detection of specific dermoscopic features using dermoscopes.
