In the last 5 years, we have observed a proliferation of consumer handheld mobile devices, such as mobile phones and portable tablet computers that are equipped with miniature built-in cameras. The image quality achieved by the cameras has been improving rapidly over the years. However, image blur as a result of hand shaking remains to be a major problem that needs to be addressed. With the supporting organizations, Research in Motion and Micromolding Solutions, Inc., the UBC team is working on a new generation of microlens module with image stabilization capabilities. At the end of the 3-year project, we will demonstrate a microlens module (3mm in diameter × 1cm thick) that has a feedback control mechanism to compensaste for image blur.
