University researchers in partnership with Bauer Hockey Corp. propose a series of studies using a human factors engineering approach (i.e. analysis of human, instrument and environment interactions) to examine ice hockey skills and their associated equipment. With development of unique simulation and on ice testing labs, direct 3D kinematic and kinetic measures of body movement mechanics will permit studies of core ice hockey skating and stick skills. In addition, elaboration of novel force mapping sensors will enable assessment of focal impact properties of lower body protective equipment. These studies will provide original and meaningful product specific information needed by Bauer's R&D engineering group in Canada, contribute to the discipline of human factors and sporting goods research, as well as generate a comprehensive understanding of ice hockey skill mechanics that may enhance athlete training, skill improvement and injury avoidance.
