Ultraviolet irradiation is a proven approach to water disinfection that is cost efficient and does not involve the addition of toxic materials to render water potable. Unfortunately the high energy densities near the quartz ultraviolet sources inevitably leads to fouling of the surfaces by inorganic minerals and biomaterials; these reduce the optical and energetic efficiency of the disinfection process, and necessitate mechanical wipers and/or manual cleaning procedures. Trojan UV Technologies has developed and patented surface modifications for these quartz sleeves, and these modifications have demonstrated their effectiveness at inhibiting this fouling. The presence and nature of surface acidic sites is believed to be important to their operation, but the fundamental mechanisms are not clear. It is also not known how to customize the surface treatments to minimize the fouling properties based on the local water properties and compositions.
