The goal of the proposed project is to lay the foundations of an enduring industry-academic collaborative relationship through the engagement of the respective teams in a first study of the gains of resource booking based algorithms in the context of the admission control and scheduling of resources at the base stations for mobile user applications. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a global standard for the fourth generation of mobile networks (4G) supported by all major players in the industry. The LTE standard promises significantly higher data rates for consumers and a considerably lower cost per bit for operators. Consequently, LTE will be a main driver for innovation in the coming years. The innovative focus of the research is the intelligent and flexible resource management in LTE network architecture. Packet scheduling and call admission control plays a fundamental role in LTE to optimize the utilization of the available radio spectrum while maintaining the Quality of Service (QoS) for both the ongoing connections and new or handover calls. This research project will investigate the gains that result from new scheduling algorithms and admission control techniques for wireless access networks. Simulation tools will be used to evaluate the performance of the proposed resource booking based algorithms for scheduling and admission control in LTE networks.
