uFluidix is committed to developing novel Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) instruments for a wide range of applications. One of uFluidix's current projects is to develop and commercialize a hand-held LOC instrument that utilizes microfluidic technology for on-farm detection of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) disease. PRRS remains an incurable infectious disease and causes significant economic and social stresses to the farm industry every year. One of the promising solutions is effective prevention through containment of the virus which requires a portable on-farm diagnostics tool to differentiate sick from healthy pigs. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which is a powerful technique for DNA amplification has proven to be successful for disease diagnosis.
