A novel methodology for aerodynamic shape optimization will be applied to the aerodynamic design of the solarship, a buoyantly-assisted, solar-powered airship intended to enable inexpensive transportation in remote areas where other modes of transport are ineffective. The combination of parameters that affect the efficiency of the solarship provide a challenging optimization problem that is distinct from that associated with conventional aircraft. The state-of-the-art aerodynamic shape optimization methodology developed on Prof. Zingg's research group is ideally suited to address this design problem. The objective is to maximize the efficiency of the solarship.
