Nondestructive testing and analysis of unknown samples has generated growing opportunities in fields such as environmental testing, industrial testing, pharmaceutical testing, food and agricultural processing as well as biological testing. Raman spectroscopy (RS) is one of the fastest growing spectroscopic techniques for nondestructive testing. RS provides a chemical fingerprint of a sample under interrogation utilizing the interaction of light with molecules. Raman spectral quality is highly dependent on the method of acquisition and instrumentation. It becomes highly challenging when dealing with biological media as biomolecules may exhibit vivid polymorphisms and, in certain cases, mutations. Tornado Spectral Systems (TSS) builds spectrometers based on a patented invention known as a high- throughput virtual slit (HTVS). The improved throughput makes it possible to use such a spectrometer in conditions of low sampling volumes and fast signal acquisition, which is generally the required case for biological testing. This enhanced performance requires updated spectral libraries and classification protocols to reach full potential for biological testing. This challenge, presented by Tornado-spectral systems, will be investigated during the period of this collaboration.
