A challenge in the application of augmented reality displays is the accurate and real-time registration of head mounted display glasses with real-world coordinates. This is a prerequisite for displaying any augmentations on the see-through display as the device must know where it is located and what directed it is pointing at in the room. For instance, if an augmented reality 3D model is to appear on the flat surface of a tabletop, the location and the orientation of the tabletop must be known in reference to the coordinate frame of the HMD. This project will develop calibration techniques to estimate the 6D registration between the AR glasses and the room coordinates in real-time. Vision-based algorithms and 3D human tracking techniques will be used for this purpose.
