The primary objective of this research proposal is to develop a multi-sensor system that assists in the precise mapping of infrastructure for its development and management. It has been estimated that between $25-trillion and $30-trillion will be injected into global infrastructure projects over the coming two decades (Financial Post, 26 January 2009). In Canada alone, there is already a commitment of $12 billion for 2009/10 and the total domestic price tag is eventually deemed to be several hundred billion dollars. Costs associated with transportation projects account for a significant portion of the overall infrastructure costs. One of the identified tasks is the creation of a georeferenced infrastructure inventory recording the location, condition, and estimated replacement value of each municipal asset. The second is the worker safety on infrastructure construction projects, specifically sub-surface construction projects. Public and worker safety is jeopardized when municipalities do not have an accurate record of the location and condition of subsurface infrastructure. Unfortunately, this aspect is well documented with tragic results. A report from North Carolina State University states that there is one death per day (globally) due to punctured sub-surface utilities. There have been many examples of these tragedies in several countries around the world.
