Innovative design of complex products and creation of ingenious manufacturing methods, such as the development of next generation hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain system and the automated generation of optimal toolpaths in 5-axis CNC machining of dies and moulds with curved surfaces, heavily rely on advanced model based design (MBD), simulation and optimization. This research addresses the fundamental design issues in HEV powertrain developments and the bottleneck planning problem in generating efficient 5-Axis CNC toolpaths.
