Social perception and social cognition in typical and atypical development

Research in my laboratory has shown that children born very prematurely are at substantial risk for motion-processing difficulties, including problems processing human actions. Some of the key objectives of the proposed research are (1) to examine how neurotypical adults use dynamic cues when processing human faces and to explore the impact of individual difference factors (e.g., observer sex, processing style) on these processes; (2) to study how the use of dynamic cues in social perception changes over the course of development; and (3) to determine how problems with motion perception affecting many children born prematurely impact this developmental process. In addition, similarities and differences in the difficulties experienced by preterm children and full-term children with autism spectrum disorders will be investigated. Finally, we will study inter-relationships between neonatal risk/neurological factors (brain damage, sepsis, etc.), performance on computerized tests of motion perception and social perceptual/cognitive functions (e.g., coding of agency and emotions; theory of mind reasoning), and social outcomes more broadly defined (internalizing disorders, social skills, etc.) in preterm children/youth. By examining how we use dynamic cues in a range of social perceptual and social cognitive tasks, and by exploring how individual variations in genetic, experiential, and cognitive factors affect these processes, the proposed work will add an important dimension to our understanding of the development and functioning of the social brain. It will also help us to understand the amazing heterogeneity that exists within and across particular diagnostic groups. As a result, the basic research described here could have widespread implications for individuals working in many sectors including science and technology, education, clinical and health psychology, cognitive and medical rehabilitation, medicine, and more.
