This is the most exciting time in history to be working on the physics and applications of new materials, thanks to the phenomenal feedback loop between nanoscience and nanotechnology. The quest towards ultimate physical limits of information technology provides an interesting focus for basic investigations in condensed matter physics. Conventional magnetic information storage has already evolved far into the "nano" regime, and the potential for new technologies such as spin electronics and nanomagnetic logic is enormous. Questions such as how quickly these systems can operate can be answered experimentally by perturbing them sharply (as in fast), and observing the response, akin to hitting a tuning fork and listening to it ring. This becomes progressively more challenging as the systems decrease in size. Our work is enabled by advances in nanofabrication, lasers, and microscopy. Together these allow us to study individual nano-objects.
