In the past five years, the applicant's research activities in construction and asset management have resulted in significant contributions to the field as shown by: (1) a large number of refereed publications with students and co-workers, in addition to one textbook and one patent; (2) graduation of 6 Ph.D. and 7 Master's students; and (3) extensive technology transfer to industry through private consultation, workshops, and development of computer programs for use by educators and professionals in the industry. The research proposed for the next five years is a continuation of the applicant's work. The research will use advanced information technology tools to support decisions related to how and when to renew healthcare facilities, which are considered one of the most challenging facilities to deal with. The proposed research will seek innovations in four main areas: (1) Identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for prioritizing renewal activities, considering parameters related to physical condition, level of service to multiple stakeholders (patients, staff), minimizing the risk of failure for critical equipment, and sustainability issues related to technology, environment, and investment value; (2) Developing a framework for multi-year life cycle analysis of healthcare facilities considering the identified KPIs and cost analysis of various renewal options; (3) Developing an integrated optimization model to maximize the value gained from the limited renewal dollars; and (4) Developing an advanced scheduling and project control model to support effective execution of renewal programs considering deadlines and budget constraints. The direct outcome of the research is a generic infrastructure asset management framework with a computerized prototype that suits healthcare facilities, and can be adapted to the more general case of mixed infrastructure assets. Ultimately, the research will develop leading technology and know-how to improve the status of Canada's infrastructure, thereby contributing to the prosperity of Canadians as well as to the competitive advantage of Canadian asset management companies.
