pi-Conjugated organic materials are becoming the materials of choice for a number of high-tech optoelectronic applications, including displays, solar cells, memories, sensors, etc. Our ability to understand and to rationally design the electronic function in such materials is of paramount importance for development of future energy & information technologies, sensors, medical diagnosis, etc. Most of the special electronic properties in organics are enabled by highly delocalized electrons in conjugated organic molecules (pi-functional materials). Our research program is set to develop new approaches to synthesis and self-assembly of the new pi-functional materials, in order to control their electronic properties at the molecular and supramolecular level, and take advantage of these properties in device applications. Performing the studies at three different levels - individual molecules, self-assembled molecular films and covalent organic frameworks, we look for a generalized understanding of how electronic conjugation and intermolecular interactions control the transport of electrical charge through organic matter, and how to apply these properties to build functional optoelectronic devices. The research program for the next 5 years is focused on (i) development of novel emissive semiconductors based on fused oligopyrrole building blocks; (ii) development of bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic materials by hydrogen-bonding control self-assembly of donor and acceptor semiconducting molecules; (iii) development of conjugated covalent organic frameworks as highly robust electronic materials with strong electronic coupling and efficient charge transport properties.
