The proposed research combines satellite estimates of soil moisture, hydrological process models and field-based observations to improve on our understanding of the spatial and temporal variability of soil moisture. The field based measurements of soil moisture will be used for the calibration and validation of an upcoming satellite mission aimed at global soil moisture observation, and for improving model simulations of hydrological processes. This research has the potential to have measurable impacts on flood prediction, drought monitoring, agricultural crop water assessment and water budget estimates necessary for sustainable water resource management.
