The amount of water available in soils is important for agricultural production, flood and drought detection and prediction and has been found to be important to improve weather and climate forecasts. The proposed Tier 2 CRC research program aims to improve the observation and estimation of soil moisture using the satellite data sets to improve the estimation of soil moisture in computer models. The final data sets will have numerous applications to environmental and agricultural modelling. The detection of global water scarcity is among the applications that will be evaluated as part of the proposed research program.
