Deployment of IEEE 802.11p family of protocols in VANET

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) allow car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications with the aim of improving road safety and reducing road accidents, but they can be used to distribute infotainment content as well. To support the development of VANET application, the FCC in the United States has already allocated bandwidth for dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) that can be used by the emerging IEEE 802.11p standard and higher layer protocols of the IEEE 1609.x family. This proposal plans to investigate the features of IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 1609.x protocols, and to develop algorithms which can efficiently integrate this protocol suite into a number of emerging VANET applications. The main objective of the proposed research is to design, analyze, and validate feasible solutions that would (a) enable efficient deployment of WAVE technology in realistic city/rural/highway environments characterized with non-uniform node velocity, density and connectivity; (b) explore WAVE deployment for different communication patterns such as beaconing, broadcast, unicast and store-and-forward; and (c) develop interconnection solutions between car-based sensor networks and VANETs.
