Web-based applications are the de facto platform for distribution of, and interaction with, large-scale data sources. Traditionally these applications had been designed based on the well known 'three-tier architecture'. Invariably, the back-end tier in the architecture would have been implemented as a relational database, providing powerful features for optimization of data queries. Without such features, developing Web applications is much more difficult; leading to increased development time, cost, and decreased responsiveness for end-users.
