Significant threats to Canadian water resources, and challenges in their sustainable management, are increasing due to a number of factors including climate change. This will have serious implications for Canada's environment, society and economy. Publications and expert reports in Canada indicate: i) no clear consensus as to the nature or origins of trends in hydro-meteorological variables; ii) more frequent, severe, and costly extreme events as well as forecasting challenges; and iii) a lack of practical methods to integrate physical and social processes, and facilitate stakeholder involvement, in water resources modeling and management.
