Large-scale, dynamic rock mass failure mechanisms in mines

Large mining-induced seismic events represent significant hazards to deep mining operations, occurring in a number of Canadian mines in the last few years. A research project is proposed to investigate the seismological nature of large-scale rock mass failure processes found in deep mines, include pillar failures, dyke failures, fault-slip events and shear-rupture events. The main objective of this research project is to characterize the seismicity associated with the different failure processes. Ultimately, this characterization will lead to earlier detection of failure processes giving greater opportunities to manage the risks associated with large mining-induced seismic events.
