Humans interact with objects in their environment through purposeful movement. The central nervous system helps to fine-tune these movements to make them as efficient as possible. The main focus of this research program is to develop a basic understanding of how the brain contributes to making movement more efficient. This research will measure activity in the brain while people prepare for and carry out movement. The results will inform us on how and where this fine-tuning takes place in the brain and to identify what factors impact the brain's ability to make these movements more efficient. Because efficient movement is an important aspect of sport, work, and day-to-day activities, and is affected by aging, injury or disease, this research impacts Canadians from all walks of life.
