Nowadays mm-wave wireless systems are emerging for many applications, such as mobile communications, data transfer, highway safety, intelligent transport, and civilian ultra-wide band radar. Operating at mm-wave band provides a very large bandwidth that can easily resolve the crowded spectrum problem at low frequency microwave bands. However, mm-wave systems suffer from multipath fading, interference and propagation path loss, resulting in limited performances in terms of transmission quality, coverage range and capacity. To address these issues, we propose in this project to develop new class of mm-wave reconfigurable antennas with dynamic radiation pattern based on active frequency surface (FSS) structures. Using this approach, our goal is to offer a reliable and compact alternative to current antenna technologies for improving the transmission quality and increasing the capacity of mm-wave wireless communication systems operating at V- band around 60 GHz.
