Humans as well as birds are supported by only two legs. Keeping an upright posture in that case requires accurate and fast control mechanisms that take advantage of a number of sensory systems, particularly the visual system, the vestibular system, and somatosensory information from sensors in joints, tendons, and muscles. In the pigeon, an inertia sensor in the lower spine might also contribute.
