The public need for rail transportation safety can be effectively served by precise train control systems. As rail signalling has evolved from the era of semaphore flags to driver-less train control, further development of such systems is permanently intertwined with advances in wireless communication technologies. The proposed research is focused on advanced modelling techniques and novel antennas, which can lead to communications based train control (CBTC) systems that combine increased precision with reduced installation and maintenance cost. The project is based on a partnership between the Electromagnetics Group at the University of Toronto with Thales Canada Transportation Solutions (TCTS), an internationally recognized leader in CBTC technologies.
