The physics of electromagnetic fields and waves underpins a large number of existing and emerging technologies that drive several innovative areas of the information and communication technology sector in Canada. For example, enabling technologies for the development of the "internet of things", are driven by core areas of electromagnetic engineering, such as the design of miniature antennas and wireless sensors for Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID). Also, research and development on electromagnetic compatibility is extremely important for companies from multiple sectors of the Canadian economy. Notably, any electronic product, including aircraft or train electronics, requires electromagnetic compatibility certification.
