The use of radio-frequency (RF) pulses for the relief of chronic, intractable pain secondary to osteoarthritic degeneration has significantly increased over the past decade. Interventional anesthetists are very skilled at directing an RF probe to the site of the sensory nerve, but there is insufficient detail available about the physics of the electric fields induced by the probe. A deeper understanding of the electric fields generated by the probe and the subsequent heat distribution around the nerve can lead to more effective designs and a better application of this pain relief procedure.
