The proposed project will examine the recovery of hemicellulose from Canfor Pulp Limited's (CPL) mill residues and its subsequent use as a pulp strength additive in order to maintain CPL's position as a leading reinforcing pulp producer. During the first phase, the optimum hydrolysis temperature, reaction time, and chemical loading for extraction of hemicelluloses from mill residues will be determined. This will be followed by a comprehensive study of hemicellulose adsorption by CPL pulp as a function of hemicellulose concentration, pulp consistency, time, temperature, and pH. The effects of this sorption on pulp properties such as tensile strength and brightness will be investigated. Decolorization of the hydrolysate using calcium hydroxide, activated carbon, or a bleaching sequence will also be assessed. The project will train 4 HQP, support continued strong pulp mill performance thus ensuring the health of surrounding communities, and establish a foundation for future biorefining opportunities.
