In forest dominated watersheds of Canada, both forest carbon (C) and water are critical for managing climate change impacts and protecting aquatic ecosystems. Understanding how forest C and water are integrated or coupled and their responses to forest disturbance at different spatial scales is urgently needed in Canadian landscapes. In this proposed research, we will use a combination of the Canadian CBM-CFS3 model with our well-established hydrological methodology to assess the effects of forest disturbance on forest C - water coupling in a large watershed (Deadman River watershed: 600km2) in the BC interior. While the CBM-CFS3 model is used for developing forest C dynamics, the hydrological analysis will be conducted to quantify forest C-water couplings. Following this study, UBC and our partner, Ecora, will jointly submit a separate proposal (NSERC CRD) for the purposes of studying how forest disturbance affects forest C-water couplings at various spatial scales (forest stand, small watershed and large watershed).
