Over the last decade the field of solar photovoltaics has experienced a significant transformation through technological and commensurate economic advances which have led to solar panel costs breaking the $1/Wp target. This trend is expected to continue but now towards the new coveted target of $1/Wp installed. Within this framework, concentrated photovoltaics is emerging as an economically viable terrestrial solar technology platform. Fundamentally, the technology involves using advanced optical and thermal materials and techniques to maximize solar harvesting through the concentration of light to upwards of 1000 suns onto a small area of the highest efficiency multijunction crystalline semiconductor photovoltaic cell.
