英文摘要
High performance on-chip molecular spectroscopy techniques will play an increasingly important role in the 21st century. Continual technological advances in the field of molecular spectroscopy are being driven by market demand for portable spectrometers that can deliver high-sensitivity and high-specificity for application fields ranging from healthcare (pharmaceuticals and biotechnology) to industry processing (chemical, oil and gas) to environmental protection. The development and commercialization of transformative low-cost high-efficacy portable spectrometers will depend on elevating optical sensing performance through innovative integration of advanced nano-photonic-electronic materials and devices. This proposal seeks to research and develop novel on-chip 'Electrically Tunable Photodetector Absorption Spectrometer' for the UV region (200 nm to 400 nm) - a spectral range amenable to sensing of most every species - in collaboration with Unisearch Associates, a world-recognized Canadian manufacturer of specialty instruments. Specifically, we propose to investigate and develop innovative electrically tunable photodetectors for absorption spectroscopy in the UV region on the basis of both photonic and plasmonic concepts. Further, we aim to develop a novel compact light emitter for the UV region. And, subsequently integrate these sub-system elements in a proof-of-concept on-chip UV absorption spectrometer using electrically tunable photodetection - with the overarching objective of transferring the technology to our industry partner. We will pursue these objectives on the strength of recent research advances in nanotechnology and materials science, a confluence of innovative ideas and know-how, and the motivation provided by Canadian industry seeking to maintain and enhance their leading position nationally and globally.
