The purpose of this project is to develop molecules that will adhere to hair providing crosslinks between strands that allow for style retention during curling or straightening. The strategy used here is to develop rigid organic molecules with a well defined and tunable geometry that contain positively charged head groups. Initially these head groups will be ammonium cations that have a strong affinity for the negatively charged surface of hair. Incorporation of additional cations or hydrogen bonding units is possible to increase the binding affinity of the molecules. The core of these molecules, while not engaged in binding the hair strands, can be varied to contain a wide range of secondary functionality including for example, fluorescent, temperature or pH sensitive dyes. We intend to provide gram quantities of these molecules to SLI Beauty for testing on hair tresses in order to identify which combinations of functionality and core groups offer the most commercial promise.
