Surface computers - which enable people to interact directly with their digital data using touch-based gestures on the computer's display surface - provide alternative user interfaces that offer more natural and intuitive computer interactions. Such direct data manipulation offers significant promise to enhance people's interactions with the type of complex geospatial data often found in applications such as military command and control, marine search and rescue, and disaster recovery operations. The rapidly increasing availability of multi-touch smartphones and tablets in the consumer electronics market, and the emergence of commercial digital tables at quality and price points suitable for real deployment provide new opportunities. In this Engage project, University of Waterloo Human-Computer Interaction expert, Dr. Stacey Scott, will work with Menya Solutions to investigate key user interface design challenges for extending Menya's existing naval planning and decision
